A Most Unreliable Narrator Issue #146 Perfect Weather to Fly
The days were shaping up, frosty and bright
Welcome to A Most Unreliable Narrator, the slice-of-life newsletter of GenXer around town, Lisa Rabey. I talk about anything and everything with a bit of swears. I’m glad you’re here.
Dear Internet,
I finished version one of this issue on Thursday or Friday and prepped it for publication. Wanted to add to it but since it was already clocking in at 2k words, decided to split the publication into two. Then decided late Saturday night I didn’t like what I added on so here I am a few hours before publication starting over from scratch.
If you read from the app or the website, you may notice this newsletter is now public. One of the things I want to tell you is why it went private in the first place, and oh the tease that I am, that was to be today’s post. But something inside kept niggling at me to not post on that topic. No names were mentioned, and no allegations were stated but still, something prompted me at 4:37 a.m. Sunday morning to re-write today’s issue.
So here I am.
Let’s talk about good things today.
Social Media Sabbatical
First, Happy Easter, Passover, and Ramadan to those who celebrate.
(I stopped at Muth’s on Saturday after getting my hair done and that place was wiped of all their candy. One of the clerks was in the process of restocking so I was able to pick up a few pieces of candy for J and I. Happy Easter to us!)
This day also marks the end of my social media sabbatical. I want to say that I learned a few things but really, the interests shifted from being online to being more in my head. This is not as tragic as it would have been several decades ago, but it was an interesting trip.
During my sabbatical, I wrote more and submitted a lot of work. Par for the course, got a lot of rejections. I found I did not take the rejections as personally as I would have in the past and spurned me on to write and submit more.
I was on FB only to post on Excessively Diverting and I also posted across the Lisa Rabey newsletter network to A Most Unreliable Narrator. I did not go on IG except to add people for future reference. Tiktok was easy to stay away from. I haven’t looked at Mastodon. I was on Twitter for @excssvlydvrtng but mainly to queue up posts. I didn’t include Reddit in my social media diet but maybe I should have. When I was feeling brain dead, I could scroll forever through the subreddits mainly sticking to my trashy TV topis.
I felt brain dead a lot.
Other than catching up on FB with friends and family, I don’t feel like I missed much.
Did I find this to be helpful? Mostly yes, the time to write was a boon but I missed the interaction with friends and family. I missed seeing their updates. Maybe I can find a happy medium to do all the things.
The White Lotus
We’re going to Cancun on Tuesday for a week, our own White Lotus (with hopes of no kidnapping or murdering happening).
We set this plan up with Beth and her husband Matt back in January. J wanted to try an inclusive resort; our friends go several times a year so we are hitching a ride with them. It’s going to be a week of margaritas, cabana people at my whim, tacos, and lots of alcohol. We’re all looking forward to it.
Because Beth and Matt go several times a year, she has around 15 swimsuits. I do not plan on owning 15 swimsuits but surprisingly I owned four and I bought a fifth one. The first four I never wore because I was too fat and now, they are a little big. The fifth one I bought in two sizes and the smallest size fits. They are all two pieces so I can mix and match tops and bottoms for endless combinations.
Beth keeps telling me she likes having options. (Sounds like me and handbags.)
I have springy dresses and skirts to wear along with tank tops and t-shirts when we’re not at the pool. I’m bringing along a pair of Chucks with my flip flops and I feel pretty good on what I’m taking. (Plus the usual bra, undies, and pajama bottoms.)
I haven’t used packing cubes in the past, but enough people were singing their praises so I’m going to give that a whirl this trip.
May the Fourth be With You
Everything is arranged for our wedding in May. We’re having a small gathering with dinner that night at a local steak place.
I’ve ordered flowery tea dresses as potential wedding dresses. One has already came in, in a size 20, and it’s big enough I could go down a size. The others should be here shortly. J and Bad Kitty are my stylists.
Instead of buying shoes, I’m going to color coordinate with a pair of Chucks. I own two dozen pair, surely a pair will match.
Our new wedding bands. (We are ordering new because J did not like the first set we got and he likes the way this set feels.)
We never went with another engagement ring for me which would have been stupid. I haven’t worn the first one in years since the weight gain started but now that I’m losing, I’m about ½ size from wearing it on my left hand. My right hand remains stubbornly fat which is annoying since I’d like to wear my engagement ring on my right ring finger.
I cannot wait to share all of this with you.
The split issue will appear on Wednesday as 146.5. Why didn’t I just lead with that one today? Didn’t feel right for some reason even though it is about music.
Crazy kids.
