A Most Unreliable Narrator Issue #140.50 editor wanted
i spel real gud
Welcome to A Most Unreliable Narrator, the slice-of-life newsletter of GenXer around town, Lisa Rabey. I talk about anything and everything with a bit of swears. I’m glad you’re here.
Dear Internet,
I entered a writing contest a few weeks back and didn’t place (didn’t expect to) but you could chip in a few bucks to get a deep edit, which I did. I have only given the edit a quick skim with plans to work on it this weekend.
It got me thinking that I desperately need an editor for my work. I’ve been told I have a good voice, good ideas, and a vibe but the little things are tripping me up. Little = grammar, tenses, and etc.
I have a chum (Anne, Colleen V.) who has edited my work before and did a splendid job. When we got talking about writing a few weeks back, she offered to edit my work again. I reached out to her Monday and there has been no response nor has she read my messages. (Thanks FB!)
I am a bit worried about her as she’s pretty responsive. I’m not on FB proper so I have no idea if she’s posting.
It prompted me it might be a good idea to have a few editors in my stable. I was directed to Reedsy but when I asked on a mailing list about the company, I got mixed reviews. Someone pointed out Editorial Freelancers Association to post the job. I submitted an ad and I’m hoping to hear back.
The thing is scope of the job(s) is quite small. I’m talking an hour or two a week or so depending on my output. EFA’s guidelines that copyeditors can do 7 - 10 pages an hour, roughly, with 250 words a page. I’m not quite that verbose (gasp) in my fiction. I write mainly micro and flash fiction with a short story here and there. Like I said, small scope. Later on, as I work on my book(s), there will chapters to edit to prep for agent queries but we’re talking way down the road.
So! If you anyone who would be interested (details below) send them my email (lisa @ rabey dot net) to introduce themselves and send along a copy of their work.
Pay per hour: $40 via PayPal or Venmo; pay retainer at start of job and rest when completed (for both our protection)
Pay up to the nearest hour.
One to two hours a week.
Must:
Comfortable with micro, flash fiction, and poetry with manuscript content in the future
Comfortable with vulgar language
Comfortable with sexual situations and language
Comfortable with hybrid (fiction/non-fiction), general fiction, and literary fiction with an occasional poem
Turn around of a week or less (there may be an occasional rush job for deadlines)
I’m sure I’m missing something.
If you or someone you know may be interested in this, hit me up (lisa @ rabey dot net) with an example.
And for the love of good christ, don’t dick me over or be sketch. Only reach out if you’re seriously interested. Please don’t waste my time. Is that enough for you?
