9: A bright start to 2021
Hello everyone!! I hope your year has kicked off to a wonderful start!! It feels like January has lasted an eternity - definitely due, at least in part, to all the political unrest and Biden inauguration - but it's been filled with so many good things for many of my good friends, so I'm glad for that.
Going to keep my update short today - currently feeling very emotionally and mentally spent, unfortunately - but I'm thrilled to share:
I received and accepted an offer for a six-month audio fellowship at a game studio!
I'll share more next month when I'm officially onboarded with the studio, but I'm really excited and grateful for this opportunity!! I spent much of January in a series of interviews with the hiring team, and each conversation had me finding more and more to love about the studio. Not only do they value fostering an environment of communication and growth, but they also actively work towards making sure that audio has a seat at the table from the beginning, rather than letting audio fall to the side! It already feels like a fantastic fit, and I'm looking forward to having this experience with this team.
Not going to lie, though - as excited as I am, I'm also extremely sad, as taking this offer means that I will need to relocate to Pennsylvania, all the way across the country. (I'll be able to work remotely once I move, but I do have to move first!) I feel uneasy about leaving behind my family, my friends, my partner, my home, and thinking about having to do so, coupled with the fear of moving during a pandemic, made this decision really difficult to make. But this opportunity is too huge to let pass by. The one thing that is comforting at the moment is the fact that I have the support of all my loved ones, and I'll always be able to come back home. So for now, I'll do my best to learn to navigate through this.
Other little updates
- Contract work on Backyard is going well! We're close to wrapping up sound on the first game, so hopefully I'll be able to share that with you all soon.
- Unfortunately, I am no longer on the contract for the thesis film I mentioned last month! Contract and rate negotiations were a bit complicated, but we eventually came to the agreement that they could not afford sound design in addition to music. I'm a bit bummed, but it was probably the best decision for both sides.
- Applied to Triband (the studio that worked on WHAT THE GOLF?)...and received a rejection in just two days' time. Ah, well!
- Interviewed with Casus Ludi for a sound designer role on an upcoming project, but was unfortunately rejected for this as well.
- Started playing Fire Emblem: Three Houses with my partner!! We played the Blue Lion route, and married Dimitri hehe.
- Started watching Horimiya with my partner - it's the anime adaptation of one of his long-time favorite mangas, and he was super excited when we heard that it would air!! It's super cute and wholesome, so I highly recommend!!
- First keyboard: Hades Durgod 68 with Cherry MX Blue switches and Peach Pastel PBT keycaps from Mintlodica!!
- Purchased a CKC Discipline65 (won a build spot from Heavenmetals' group buy/raffle!) and quite a few artisan keycaps!
- Media consumption: Fire Emblem: Three Houses, Genshin Impact, Boss Monster, Horimiya, Bridgerton, The Good Witch, Nice to Meet You
& That's all for now! Thanks so much for reading, and be well!
Stay cozy,
Amerlyn
