Things You Can Do
With the firing of Jimmy Kimmel, which is actual government censorship according to AP, here’s something you can do: put a letter in the mail to Disney. (Here’s a gift link to The New York Times article.) Yes, an actual letter. My lovely friend Cass Morris snagged the relevant address:
Disney-ABC Home Entertainment and Television Distribution
500 S. Buena Vista St.
Burbank, CA 91521-3515
There’s something else you can do, too. Call your reps. Here is a script:
I am [Name with spelling], and I’m a constituent from [city, ZIP code]. Today, I am calling to demand that [SEN/REP NAME] call out this horrific censorship by the administration and the FCC in light of the Kimmel suspension. It was beyond the pale that Carr has acted the way he has, threatening Disney.
This is a fundamental free speech issue and flies in the face of everything America stands for. Please take a stand against this.
I do/do not need a response. [If you’d like one, give an email address or your number. I never ask for one, but I do watch the news to see what the sen/rep does.]
I’ll be honest. Right now, I am angry and terrified. It seems relentless. But we have power. And our elected officials have power too. It’s time to use it. Because this is more than just a canary in the coal mine. The coal mine is on fire, and we’ve got to our parts.
Artists know that this is a slippery slope. Comedians should not be threatened like this. Free speech is either something everyone is entitled to, or it isn’t free. (Note: Free speech does not include hate speech. If you need to understand how hate speech is different, it is rooted in attacking someone’s humanity.)
