Lately, life has left me thinking a lot. Really a lot. Like, too much. Because there’s a lot happening. And I was reminded, by various things, that everything falls apart at some point.

Your plans. Your job. Your dream. Your relationship. Sometimes, it is so you can build something better, something new. Sometimes entirely from scratch, and sometimes using bits and bobs of the old things. A mosaic to the new made from the old. What was becoming what is. The stained glass of heartbreak made into something beautiful.

Among other things, I’ve been looking back on something I wanted very badly once. And all things considered, I am glad I never got it. Glad things broke down, glad for the tears and the heartbreak and the regrouping. Glad I knew when I’d had enough and what I needed to do next.

How to walk away and walk toward—not toward someone else, but myself. Step by step. Inch by inch. With all the courage that can be mustered.

Sometimes, you’ve simply got to take a deep breath and leap. Maybe you fly, maybe you fall. Maybe the outcome doesn’t matter at all, and the power is in the choosing. It’s rarely easy. And sometimes, you have to do the crazy thing. For your own sake. Maybe to not just survive, but to thrive. Sometimes, you’ve got to square your shoulders and say no instead of yes. Please yourself instead of other people. Not bend your heart into knots like a pretty decoration.
