A Torch, a Sword, a Song

Your heart knows
that love and rage
are two sides of the same Moon--
shining, stark,
and sometimes full of terror.

You face the horrors
to bear witness, to remember,
to stand against the lies--
cruelty doesn't get the last word,
love does.

Hope is a fierce thing,
messy and resilient, knuckle-bruised
and bloody, a fighter
in myriad ways--
take a breath
and decide
where you stand,
on which side of history,
on which side of goodness,
on which side
of this ocean of hate.

Justice stands holding a torch,
holding a sword,
singing a song,
you can hear her--
   do not turn away,
   do not give up hope:
cowards always falter,
bullies always run.
