All Saints Addendum: Caution Regarding Scams
Greetings from All Saints!
A fake social media account purporting to be one of the pastors has come to our attention, so it is perhaps a good time to remind you to be alert regarding scams, particularly “phishing.” Short version of this: Mpho and Kyle will never ask you to give us money directly, especially not in an untraceable way.
A regrettably common tactic is for the scammer to send an email or message on social media purporting to be from a pastor. It is usually out of the blue, quite vague (sometimes not even using proper names), and requests money for some urgent cause (usually not specified), often in the form of gift cards or other untraceable instruments. If you look closely, you will often notice that the email address is different from our real address.
But even if the email address or phone number looks right, please do not reply to these messages. If anything about a message you receive from us seems even slightly off, contact us through our real email addresses or phone numbers (i.e. not as a reply to the suspicious message) and ask if it is real (the answer will almost certainly be no), and we can give the rest of the community a heads up. Alerting the police is also a good idea.
As a general rule, it is worth the awkwardness of verifying the authenticity of basically anything online before sending money.
Also, please send us money! But to the church through the usual channels, not to us personally.
That’s all for Today! Want to talk to a priest? We want to talk to you too!
