We keep the history of women alive
Happy New Year!
A few words from suffragist Elizabeth Cady Stanton (1815-1902):
The greatest block to advancing civilization all along the line has been the degradation of woman.
How many Ruth Bader Ginsburgs, Shirley Chisholms, Tig Notaros, DORIS KEARNS GOODWINS, Malala Yousafzais, Sylvia Riveras, Lizzos, and essentially any woman you admire who has a public voice -- how many have there been throughout the history of humanity whose talents and drive and contributions we never got to see or experience because of the absolute bullshit of patriarchy?
Women have made up half the world since our beginning and yet in history we see a micron of a sliver of who they have been, what they have done, and what they could have done if they hadn't been silenced.
This newsletter is one tiny yelp in a sea of noise, but I will continue in 2020 to share some of the at times wonderful, at times terrifying, at times shameful, and at times glorious history of women on this earth. If you're interested in hearing about someone from a particular culture or time, let me know. Have a truly excellent 2020!
