Peggy Barber is creating all your library nostalgia
Librarian and marketer Peggy Barber died last August at age 75. Few outside the library world know her name, but almost EVERYONE in America knows the campaign she created. Because Peggy Barber…invented the Read campaign.
YES. THAT one. The one you saw everywhere growing up. A celebrity or beloved animated character or puppet, holding a book with the word “READ” prominently displayed above or below them. So simple. So iconic.
The Read campaign began in 1980, its first poster Mickey Mouse reading by a fireplace with Pluto next to him. Since then, there have been at least hundreds of Read poster variations, with new ones still being created today. Peggy Barber influenced the childhood of thousands and thousands of people. And we should know her name.
