Marie Curie and women's history links
Did you notice we just skipped all of Women’s History Month? That’s because unlike those POSEUR women’s history newsletters. we talk about women’s history even when it’s not on theme. Bam. Also I moved and there’s been a lot of unpacking to do.
A few things:
- Did you see this Reductress article, because it is great
- I am all about having a National Women’s History Museum and also having them hire me someday, but also, damn, it is currently extremely white so maybe hire some other people before me
- I write a biweekly (here meaning twice a week and not every two weeks; this word is near-useless) nonfiction newsletter for Book Riot called True Story — here’s the International Women’s Day newsletter
I was thinking about this newsletter and what I want it to be, and since it is entirely my own creation and subject to my writing whims, I realized I can continue it in the vein in which it was started: stating random fun facts about women from history. Like how Florence Nightingale had a pet owl.
DID YOU KNOW that Marie Curie went to an “underground educational enterprise” called Flying University that operated from 1885 to 1905 (and was briefly revived in the ’70s because of course it was). Poland was under the control of the Russian Empire and Flying University was meant to educate Polish youth while avoiding government censorship. If you want to read more about it, and you definitely should, check out Marie Curie Attended a Secret, Underground “Flying University” When Women Were Banned from Polish Universities.
