Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti is upending all your colonial systems

The country! Nigeria. The woman! Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti (1900-1978). Also called "the Lioness of Lisabi," Ransome-Kuti fought for women's rights in Nigeria, including the right to vote, drive a car, and not be arbitrarily taxed (the latter was specifically for the Egba people in western Nigeria).

Because of her amazing leadership, the separate tax rate for women was ABOLISHED (this was instituted by the British, by the way, so screw those guys), she was elected to the house of chiefs, organized workshops for illiterate "market women," fought against colonialism, and founded the Abeokuta Women's Union, which became a model women's rights organization.

She later helped negotiate Nigeria's independence from the British government, and was killed at age 77 while opposing a military dictatorship.

If you want to read more about Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, there's an awesome comic online on UNESCO's site.
