Dorothea Dix will fix all your systems
Did you know! Dorothea Dix, in the mid-1800s, not ONLY visited every public and private mental facility she could, but she did so to catalog their issues and come up with a new system for treating the mentally ill. Because she looked around and went “this is bullshit and I will FIX it.” Before that she’d established a whole series of schools and then wrote books on education!
THEN! Because she was like, “NOT ENOUGH THINGS,” when the Civil War broke out in her 60s, she immediately volunteered and was put in charge of organizing the Union Army hospitals and overseeing all the nurses! All of them! Do you know who worked under her? That’s right, Louisa May Alcott.
She wasn’t, let’s say, well liked in this position though, so she was kicked out after two years. But then she went to Europe and continued advocating for better facilities and treatment for the mentally ill because Dorothea! Dix! cared!
Everyone reform a failing system today in honor of Dorothea Dix.
