BLACKOUT arrives May 8! You can read an excerpt now...
Hello!
Just wanted to send out a quick reminder that May 8 is the publication date for my new novel, Blackout, which is the fourth book in my Pete Fernandez Miami Mystery series, published by Polis Books.
The novel finds Pete pulled back to Miami when he discovers new evidence from a cold case he failed to solve years before - involving a high school classmate who went missing months before graduation. Pete and his partner Kathy's quest to solve the legendary Miami crime brings them into the orbit of an mysterious and ambitious gubernatorial candidate and a deadly, once-dormant Miami cult known as La Iglesia de la Luz.
I wanted to explore a story about redemption and coming to terms with past mistakes, and how that could grant you the freedom to start living, as opposed to sleepwalking through your days. The novel also spotlights different eras of Pete's life - surly teenager, fall-down drunk and present-day private eye - and unravels the story of a deadly cult that's managed to weave its tentacles into every part of Miami. Blackout is a novel about regrets, the power of secrets and facing your demons.
I'm very grateful for the kind words some early readers have shared about the book, which you can see further down in this email.

Praise for BLACKOUT:
Named one of the most anticipated crime novels of 2018 by Literary Hub/CrimeReads, Mystery People and BookBub!
"Expertly weaving the past and present, Alex Segura masterfully cranks the tension while revealing the demons that both haunt P.I. Pete Fernandez and drive him forward. Blackout will hook you on Fernandez and Alex Segura. Let's have more, and soon."
―Robert Crais, New York Times bestselling author of The Wanted
“Blackout has everything that terrific detective fiction demands—a sharp, twisty plot full of shadowed corners, hot and humid streets, and brutal, yet convincing crimes. But it also delivers on the human level—showing characters at their most vulnerable, damaged, and desperate while demonstrating their powers of resilience and insisting on the possibility for redemption.” — Ivy Pochoda, acclaimed author of Wonder Valley
“Alex Segura one of the writers who reminds me why I fell in love with PI fiction and wanted to write it.” ―Laura Lippman, New York Times bestselling author of Sunburn
“Blackout is cool, vivid—and poignant. In Alex Segura’s capable hands, Florida becomes a haunted landscape where hope can’t quite be eradicated. We’re with Pete Fernandez every step of the way.” — Meg Gardiner, Edgar Award-winning author of UNSUB and Into the Black Nowhere
"Alex Segura’s latest is dark, devious, and devastating. Deftly shifting through three distinct periods in time, he shows us the scars that never heal, while allowing for moments of grace. Blackout is, quite simply, a knockout. " — Hilary Davidson, Anthony Award–winning author of One Small Sacrifice
“With its smart dialogue and vivid settings, this series concentrates equally on the trajectory of Pete Fernandez’s life and the mysteries he tries to solve. From both perspectives, it’s fine crime fiction.” — Booklist
"Segura’s latest offers a mind-spinning mix of dark and darker elements – not to mention multiple literal head-blowing moments, and, part-way through, a super-shocking surprise." — Seattle Review of Books
