slow and steady week of nothing

work

Not a lot happened at work this week. It was pretty mellow, which I think it is a bit of a clam before the pre-thanksgiving storm. Next week, I'll be working to submit one of our papers to S&P while also bidding on the abstracts that have already been submitted. On top of that, I am forcing myself to stay on top of my Eurocrypt reviews, because otherwise I'll have to cram 20 reviews in the last minute. I made some slow and steady progress on that front this week, but not as much as I would've liked.

I've also been looking ahead to next semester. Mostly, that's been planning my class (in broad strokes) and thinking about writing some of my first grants. I know there's a lot to learn, so hopefully I can get up to speed to be really good at my teaching/grant writing parts of my job quickly!

non-work

Outside of work, not a lot has happened either. The weather was beautiful this week, if a little cold, so I really liked my walks to and from work. I'm about halfway through The Stone Sky, which is ramping up for an exciting ending. I also have managed to continue my win-streak in Hades 2, although I definitely had some very close calls. I didn't have a lot of time to finish up Silksong, but I at least moved through some cut scenes.

I did vote, though! Happy that I got to participate in Hoboken's local government. I'll have to remember to vote in the runoff election for Mayor in a couple of weeks. Changing my address meant missing out on the NYC mayoral election, but that's ok with me. Good luck to Zohran though! Hopefully, Emily wins and can make a difference in Hoboken too.

questions

  • What practical ways that we could use to verify legitimate photos or videos?

    • I went down a short rabbit hole of looking into various types of signatures

    • I wonder if there's a realistic way that we could combine signatures and various TPM-type technology to authenticate images for distribution online

  • What function classes for homomorphic secret sharing are separated from one-way functions?

Thanks for reading to the end! Here’s a picture of Timmy and one of a cool skyline from this week:
