finding a summer rhythm

work

The presentation deadline for my DSO contract is creeping up, so I'm starting to brainstorm how I want to present that work. Unfortunately, it's the same day that my S&P reviews are due, so I'm going to try to stay on top of all that work and avoid as much procrastination as possible. I think I'm at a good balance between the research and these other services right now, though. I'm sure everything will get disrupted in a few months when I start at Stevens. For now, I want to focus on the present moment and be as productive as possible.

I also just found out that my office will be ready to move into in a couple of weeks! I'm excited to get settled and used to the commute. I prefer being able to go somewhere other than the home to work.

non-work

Outside of work, things are also going well! I finished The Algebra of Wealth, which was a really useful read. It has a lot of good practical advice, some of which I knew already, but a lot of which needed to be presented more clearly to me. I still have my internal struggle about how to grow wealth ethically, but I'm much more confident I will find a way that works for me.

A lot of the books I had on hold became available at the same time, so I'm a little unsure what to start next. But, I decided to start Oryx and Crake, because that's one I've heard good things about. (And, it's nice to go back to reading fiction.) I've also decided to try using The Storygraph to track and encourage reading, but I'm not sure if I'll stick with it yet—I also won't take the time to fill in what I've read in the far past.

Also, this weekend, my sister is visiting NYC. I'm excited that I'll get to see her! At the same time, my partner finished her 9+1 program with the NYRR, so she'll get to run in the NYC marathon next year! 🥳

things i saw this week

  • A NYT article highlighting how bad ticks are in the NYC area

  • A Reuter's article reporting that the Pope is calling for AI regulation

  • A Politico article that discusses some of the internet's reliance on government institutions

  • Interesting visualizations of primes by Alberto Fraile and Daniel Fernández

  • A WIRED journalist fails to disappear from the internet

  • An oddly religious interview of Peter Thiel

questions

  • Are there FHE schemes that can hide the number of inputs to the circuit that is evaluated?

    • I've been looking into circuit-hiding FHE, and I don't think I've seen a strong enough definition that meets this yet.

  • What papers contain the best theoretical and best practical attribute-based encryption schemes? What are the major open problems?

    • I'm going to start a new project around ABE, so I want to be as prepared as possible.

Thanks for reading to the end! Here's another picture of our cat enjoying the comfy bed:
