Things I Have Enjoyed & Learnt 018
Next time I'm going to leave this introduction out. I never have anything interesting to say in it.
Things I Have Enjoyed
Wiebe Wakker's story of riding the Mauritanian iron ore train. I'd kind of like to do it myself.
The time my wife misheard me and thought I wanted to go to a waterslide museum, rather than a museum that was on the waterside.
I know it's technically vandalism, but the graffiti artist takeover of an abandoned half-built block of flats during Art Basel Miami Beach is objectively beautiful. Lots of amazing drone footage too.
Circle to Search on my Pixel 8 Pro is an incredible feature. I've gone from zero to I-don't-know-how-I-coped-without-it in record time. The haptic feedback whilst using the feature is absolutely pitch-perfect.
I have strong feelings about beer. Less Beer, More Foam is a good read if you too prefer your beer with a Czech pour.
Köln in Germany. I loved the Kölsch "system" and I finally got to ride the Schwebebahn in Wuppertal. I also enjoyed a lot of raw meat sandwiches. I can't believe that all our public transport for the whole trip only cost 49 EUR, and that was for a month-long ticket we only used five days of.
The built-in air stairs on the Ryainair Boeing 737 MAX-8 we took to Köln. So much quicker to deboard passengers.
This ad from Miami Beach "breaking up" with Spring Break. Interesting that the US is so car-pilled that "100-dollar parking" and "DUI checkpoints" are being used as threats.
"A method to unilaterally disable all nuclear bombs on Earth, remotely and without countermeasure."
Things I Have Learnt
Things Unexpectedly Named After People. Chances are you've already seen this, but it blew my mind that the "My" in "MySQL" and the "Page" in "PageRank" are people.
There is an anatomically correct heart emoji: 🫀 (If you're looking at this on a Windows computer you're really missing out; just about everyone does a better job of rendering U+1FAC0 Anatomical Heart than Microsoft.)
How sunny the US is compared to Europe.
The Tokyo Dome is supported by air, so when you're leaving you get pushed out by air pressure.
In France pedigree dogs' names must begin with the correct letter for the year. I don't speak French so I couldn't work out what this year's letter is, so if anyone can let me know I'd appreciate it.
Car seats are an effective form of contraception. Probably not how you think.
The End
