[Thought Soup] Theory of Water week 1
Hey. This week we're starting Theory of Water by Leanne Betasamosake Simpson. I'm also experimenting with other format ideas and recalibrating our reading pace, so please take a look at the schedule at the end and let me know if you have opinions about it.

what I'm reading
This week I'm reading parts 1-4 of Theory of Water:
- When it Was Icy, I Could Fly
- Nibi
- Listening in Our Present Moment
- Sintering
buy the book, support The Sameer Project
If you haven't bought it yet, please consider placing your order here at Open Books: A Poem Emporium. W4G-tagged books on the Open Poetry bookstore send proceeds to The Sameer Project, one of the only organizations still on the ground in Gaza, and struggling to continue to meet the needs of Palestinians.
If you can't buy from the bookstore, please consider making a donation directly to one of the Sameer Project's campaigns, or consider sharing a fundraiser with friends. If you can't do any of that, consider sharing the reading group with some friends; if some of them can buy the book from Open Books, or even make direct donations to The Sameer Project, then that would help enormously.
reminder on the format
On Mondays, I'll email with what we're reading this week from the book. If I have something else to share, I'll also link to that.
On Saturdays, I'll send an email at about 11AM ET. It'll mostly serve as a reminder that we're going to meet if you'd like to join us, and some short reflections to help stoke a conversation.
schedule
Here's my reading plan for the next few weeks. Notice that I'm planning for us to take a short break to read some other things in a few weeks. If you have something in mind that you'd like to share, I'd love to hear about it. We'll probably fit it into that week, but we might read it in parallel with these other readings, depending on our reading pace and stuff.
| Reading | Week of... |
|---|---|
| parts 1-4 | Apr 13 |
| parts 5-8 | Apr 20 |
| parts 9-12 | Apr 27 |
| break to read other stuff | May 4 |
| parts 13-16 | May 11 |
| parts 17-20 | May 18 |
| parts 21-23 | May 25 |
If you have thoughts about what to read next, or feelings about the reading pace or number of pieces we're reading, please let me know.
Okay, that's all for now. Stay safe this week; we'll talk Saturday.
