AIxDesign In The Loop #8

AIxDesign In The Loop #8 ➰

MARCH 2021 | issue #8

Every month we share some articles and resources that have stood out to us within the AI x Design landscape, relevant jobs and events that you may find interesting, as well as highlight updates and works from our community. We do not claim credit for any of the works linked within this newsletter; all credits belong to their rightful creators. Some descriptions of articles are extracts from original pieces. We're currently working on an auto-summarize feature ;) Note: newsletter may not be properly displayed in dark mode depending on your email client (we're working hard to make it accessible in all settings).

UPCOMING EVENT 🗓 — AIxDesign Keynote: AI explainability using Data Storytelling

Image

We mostly see the application of data storytelling in the context of design, journalism, or media outlets. Yet how can data storytelling be applied to AI technologies to help people better see through AI? If we want to support fair and trustworthy use of AI we have to first be able to explain this technology by reimagining the ways we communicate algorithms and models.

About the speaker: Mara Pometti is Lead AI Content Strategy at IBM. She defines and designs the strategy for AI solutions by revealing overlooked insights hidden in companies’ data. Mara finds herself at the intersection of the technical and business realms, acting as a translator who bridges these two worlds through data stories. Throughout her journey, she has been adopting design as an approach to explore the AI’s outcome and craft it into new content.

As a polymath sitting at the intersection of data science, journalism and design, Mara aims to bring together strategy, design, and storytelling to connect AI to people by making it more understandable, trustworthy and POP.

OPEN CALLS 📢

[Carnegie Melon University / Microsoft Research] Looking for research participants for a study on what methods and tools could better support collaboration around fairness in machine learning. For individuals or teams working on fairness in ML; open to team members in all roles (e.g., engineers, data scientists, product/project managers, UX/UI designers, domain experts, etc.)

We will be conducting interviews and design activities for 45 to 90 minutes each, depending on your availability. These sessions will be conducted remotely in one-on-one or small group settings, and you will be compensated with a $30 gift card for participating in each session. We will anonymize all participants at the individual, team, and organization level. You will have the opportunity to decide not to respond to particular questions, and, prior to publication, we will give you the opportunity to review any anonymized quotes from you.

If you are interested, please complete form here. Contact: [email protected]

OPEN CALLS 📢

[AIxDesign Events Support] Open call for support in organizing events! As you know we organize keynotes and workshops that are open to the public (and donation-based) around our 5 pillars (responsible, accessible, creative, applied, and user-friendly AI) and we're looking for help to keep these up on at least a monthly basis.

It consists of choosing and reaching out to invite speakers, co-creating the session with them on a call, writing a nice event title & description, posting on Eventbrite, sending email with link, potentially hosting during the event, and sending follow-up emails to the participants after. We're open to help with all of it but if you'd like to only help with some parts that's helpful too.

Contact: Nadia or Avantika via LinkedIn or community Slack.

OPEN CALLS 📢

[AI Ethics Project] Looking for experts in AI Ethics, or (data scientists, designers, product owners) practitioners who deal with / would like to be better at crafting responsible AI systems in their practice. Contact: Celine Dutier via LinkedIn or community Slack.

OPEN CALLS 📢

[AI x Design Careers Project] Looking for co-researcher and data guru with experience in web scraping. Also looking for AI Design pioneers, recruiters, job boards, or university faculty to collab in project! Contact: Boshra Javaheri via LinkedIn or community Slack.
