AIxDesign In The Loop #7 ➰

FEBRUARY 2021 | issue #7

Every month we share some articles and resources that have stood out to us within the AI x Design landscape, relevant jobs and events that you may find interesting, as well as highlight updates and works from our community. We do not claim credit for any of the works linked within this newsletter; all credits belong to their rightful creators. Some descriptions of articles are extracts from original pieces. We're currently working on an auto-summarize feature ;) Note: newsletter may not be properly displayed in dark mode depending on your email client (we're working hard to make it accessible in all settings).

The Art of Code

By Dylan Beattie | Software and technology has changed every aspect of the world we live in. At one extreme are the ‘mission critical’ applications - the code that runs our banks, our hospitals, our airports and phone networks. Then there’s the code we all use every day to browse the web, watch movies, create spreadsheets… not quite so critical, but still code that solves problems and delivers services. But what about the code that only exists because somebody wanted to write it? Code created just to make people smile, laugh, maybe even dance?

How art holds AI to account

By Daphne Milner via It's Nice That | Mainstream conversations around artificial intelligence, while sometimes characterised by a rhetoric of scientific progress, often deal with anxieties related to the tech. Critiquing its shortcomings is not enough, however. Art can help shape the future of artificial intelligence by exposing its limitations and tendencies to further systemic inequalities.

How do creativity and computation relate? How does AI open up new possibilities for creative collaborations with the non-human?

Come join us to explore the relationship between creativity and computation and get inspired for your own creative practice in our first session of 2021.

About the speaker: Stefan Leijnen is the director of the Asimov Institute, Professor of the Artificial Intelligence research group at the Utrecht University of Applied Sciences, and senior advisor to the Netherlands AI Coalition. In his research, he explores how prediction relates to understanding, how machine learning can be constrained, and whether creativity and sentience can emerge from machines.

PROJECT UPDATES 🌱

AI Ethics led by Celine Dutier

New community project launched! A collaborative research project that weaves in Design and Ethics to create a responsible, purposeful AI system. We are crafting tools and frameworks to 1) build a shared understanding of the project’s ethical landscape, 2) implement ethics ‘doing’, and 3) democratise AI ethics (have a shift from ethical AI to responsible, or purposeful AI).
