We're back bigger and better than ever!
HELLO! This is your friendly neighborhood comedy co-host letting you know that your favourite show is back, this Friday, at the Newtown Community Centre!
“Taskmaster NZ is airing at the Newtown Community Centre?” you ask? No! Your other favourite comedy show, Airhorn! The chaotic carnival of fun that was almost shut down for being too incredible.
As you may have seen from the posters around town, the news reports on social media, and on our website: we had a hard September. The Newtown City Council sent a quite threatening cease and desist letter (along with other material that, legally, I cannot print) which forced us to cancel our September show. This was an incredibly tough decision, but the best choice for our families.
However, we did not spend the month cowering. We spent it working out, getting stronger, and learning civic law through wikihow articles and the helpful folks at the citizen advice bureau! And now we are here in October, standing defiant, ready to put on a show that will knock your socks off no matter what the council tries to pull. You deserve to see the best comedy Wellington has to offer, and gotdammit we are going to give it to you!
And boy oh boy what an October lineup do we have for you!
We got your Airhorn! regulars: the fan favourite Jak Darling, the twin star supernova of laughs that is Ginge and Minge, the literate laughbringer Alayne Dick, the effortlessly cool and hilarious Te Waiarangi Ratana, and the infinite battery of batty brilliance Lesa macLeod-Whiting. And then we got the frickin guests! This month we’re so chuffed to welcome the powerhouse local legend Jerome Chandrahasen and the triple-threat of talent Maria Williams to our glitter and goo covered stage! Hosting it all is your humble newsletter writer Zach Mandeville!
I am so excited for this show! I am writing this in the library and just got shushed cos I am frickin’ pounding on my keyboard but I can’t help it! This is not a show that can be typed out quietly!
Tickets are moving fast, but still available at https://airhorn.nz
In other news: the Billy T. James award nominees were just announced and Airhorn! is well-represented on the list! Our hearty congratulations goes out to Lesa MacLeod-Whiting, Booth the Clown & Jak Darling, and Hoani Hotene for their nominations this year. The Billy T. is the most prestigious award for fresh comedy talent; past winners include Guy Montgomery, Abby Howells, Ben Hurley, and Melanie Bracewell. Only five nominees are chosen each year, and Airhorn! members make up 3 of those 5 nominations. It’s ridiculous, and also obvious and inevitable! The Newtown City Council may hate us and wanna shut us down, but everyone else can see that Airhorn! is the sharpest, freshest, wildest, and frankly best comedy around!
Excited to see y’all this Friday, 8pm, at Newtown Community Centre. As a prize for reading this full newsletter: if you see me (Zach), say the code word “Moxley” and you’ll receive a free watermelon water! If that prize doesn’t sound good to you, then please tell me what you want! I’m shooting in the dark here. Find me at the show, tell me “Moxley”, then whatever the hell it is you’re looking for and I’ll try to get it for you— plus the watermelon water, cos I’ve already bought it and I thought you’d like it, but I was wrong. I’m trying my best!!!
