Airhorn Recs!
HELLO DEAR FRIENDS HELLO.
Airhorn is This Friday! But this email isn’t about that! All I want to do is to give nice things to you; and until we figure out how to send food and drink via email, the best I can offer is a list of nice recommendations! I would love for you to open this email and discover a cold glass of Pineapple Jarrito’s soda, but technology hasn’t kept pace with my heart’s desires, so in the meantime here is a list of some things we here at Airhorn HQ(i.e. a small desk inside Giggle HQ) have been enjoying!
For Listening
Horsegirl, Phonetics On and On
I love this album. Horsegirl is three hyper-talented friends from Chicago that have that wonderful wellspring of creativity that comes from being young, smart, and supported by a scene. It’s a deceptively simple album, schoolyard rhymes over violin drones and 3 note guitar riffs, but it hits you sideways with surprise emotion and beauty. Put it on some pensive morning and watch the day open up.
Hell Year’s Balearic Gabba, Vol. 2
This is a breezy and delightful EP of “gabba” remixes of balearic pop. To be honest, I don’t really know genres, especially in electronica, so I don’t feel confident in what gabba or balearic means. What I do know is the final song is soooo frickin’ good. I listened to it while walking up Cuba St. during Cuba Dupa this last weekend, and it got me too hype: walking super fast, weaving through the traffic with ease and purpose, feeling cool and determined like Driver from the movie Drive.
For Watching
HOLLYWOOD STORY: Timeless Toni Storm vs Mariah May - Full AEW Feud
If your hankering for more wrestling after our Fringe show, this here is a good long watch of one of the best feuds of the last couple years. It is a twisted, sex and psyche drenched hollywood epic told through suplexes and stiletto stabs. Toni Storm is a Kiwi-born, Aussie bred marvel, and with Mariah she created something strange and dumb and beautiful, like the best wrestling.
Alice Snedden’s Bad News
If you want something slightly more respectable, this is a great comic news series recommended by our own Jak Darling. Alice investigates the big issues of Aotearoa with admirable drive and great punchlines.
Nicole Dyer, an Evening of Crowdwork
Recommended by our own crowdwork queen Alayne Dick, this is a wonderful hour special from a sharp and sweet comic and a wonderfully game crowd in Madison Wisconsin. All types of good stuff for you!
For Reading
The First Men’s Guide to Ironing: How you can survive the decline and virtual dismemberment of everything you used to depend on
Recommended by our own Nina Hogg, who described this strange treasure of a book as “Hilarious satire written by someone who’s well aware of their audience and the small money grab of creating largely unhelpful guide.” Comedic genius from E. Todd William
Ryland Duncan’s Good Information
Lastly, another newsletter rec for you! Ryland is a dear friend of mine (maybe the dearest?) and his newsletter is the most consistently hilarious thing to hit my inbox each week (and I subscribe to Garfield!). The premise is simple: people ask him about different topics, and he tries to tell as much as he knows about them. What results is a beautiful, generous, richly hilarious rundown of everything from basketball to army to sofas to soup.
