Airhorn!, fan favourite and critic's choice, coming soon!
Hello, dear friends and fans of Airhorn! Hello!
It is a blustery and wild spring day as I write to you, which is a perfect time to tell you “AIRHORN IS COMING AT YOU, DECEMBER 6th!”
You may disagree. You may say, “Ah, but for me, Airhorn represents the warm blue optimism of midsummer day.” Or you may say, “To me, Airhorn is best represented by the clear indigo nights of winter, the laughter and community like logs on a fire, beating back the cold'. Meanwhile I’m just sitting there — silent, serene, wearing the smug smile of a wiseman — cos I know the frickin’ truth: Airhorn is best in EVERY season. But most especially the HOLIDAY SEASON!
Airhorn comes to you 6 December!
That’s right! Friday, 6 December, Airhorn! is holding a seasonal celebration, a perfect mix of holiday hee hee’s and ha ha’s (plus a whole bunch of other laugh sounds, Airhorn brings them all) We are filled to the brim with good times and amazing comedians and I’m gonna list them for you now!
WE GOT:
- Alayne Dick - The dasher
- Anna MacLean - The dancer
- Booth the Clown - A comet
- Jak Darling - A vixen
- Ginge & Minge - a coupla prancers
- Sandy Burton - a donner (?)
- Te Waiarangi - a blitzen(??)
- and Zach Mandeville (that’s me!) - the red-nosed outcast of comedy!
And hosting it all is our mirthful and magical Santa: Lesa MacLeod-Whiting!
If you’d like to see the show (and based on you being on this newsletter, you probably do), then I got some good news: there are still a few early bird tickets available! You can save 5 dollars!
That’s right: If you buy tickets now, you get them for $5 dollars off. That’s enough savings to buy a, let’s be honest, small and quite basic cup of coffee. Like maybe a short black? Coffee is too damn expensive!
But this isn’t coffee crank news, this is Airhorn! And Airhorn is a dollar and laugh bargain!!
Other News: Airhorn is DA CRITICS CHOICE
Tis time of year isn’t just the holiday season… it’s the award season too, and I’m proud to say that Airhorn was nominated for BEST LIVE SHOW by the New Zealand Comedy Guild.
For folks outside “the industry”, the NZ Comedy Guild Awards is basically like a combination of the Oscars, the Grammys, The Tonys, and the Nobel Prize. In other words, a pretty big deal. Not only was Airhorn nominated, but our incredible crew was well represented across all the categories. Booth the Clown was nominated for Comic Originality; Lesa, Alayne, and Hoani were all nominated for Breakthrough act; Lesa’s podcast Are We Pals? (with Airhorn alum Samantha Hannah) was nominated for Best Online Production; and Hoani was nominated for best joke!
What a showing! And because I worry that we are coming off a bit “too big for our britches”, I should tell you that I heard about the awards while riding the bus, and mere minutes after receiving the news I was made fun of by a group of (extremely cool looking) teenage girls because I was “a grown man reading an Iron Man comic”. They did not understand (and I didn’t know how to tell them) that it was actually a really well-written Iron Man comic… and it technically wasn’t Iron Man but Iron Lad, an ironic and striking re-imagining of the titanium titan. I couldn’t figure out how to say that both the comic and the person reading them were pretty well regarded by critics, so I just pretended I couldn’t hear them over my headphones. We’re not all winners here at Airhorn, but the most of us are!
And the biggest winner is YOU! For making it to the end of this newsletter, and being part of the coolest audience in all of Aotearoa. I hope to see you in a few weeks, 6/12, at AIRHORN!
