Can You Fry an Egg on Your Sidewalk in June, July, or August?

Have you ever wondered if you could fry an egg on the pavement because it's just that hot? That's the kind of heat one experiences in Oklahoma summer.
We're in the thick of it. The older I get the more heat-sensitive I become. I took a 30-minute walk at 2 a couple of days ago and lost count of the times I sat on the curb to prevent my fainting.
When we're lucky, we don't have any days at 100 degrees Fahrenheit or above. On an especially difficult year, we endure 100-degree days all lined up in a row plus humidity that makes it feel like it's 10000 degrees outside.
What's all this got to do with writing?
Not much. It's more so got to do with my general malaise and lack of fire to jumpstart much of anything.
And, that's okay.
I'm still investigating root causes of my chronic pain and mental health challenges. I'm tired. Really tired. As is, I'm sure, most everyone else, especially the HSPs (highly sensitive peeps).
So, instead of trying to be all swarthy with my newsletter, I'm rounding up stories of which I'm particularly proud.
The last time I sent out one of these bad-boys was April

Dorothy (Bea Arthur) wears just the right kinda sassypants for me. She’s the no-nonsense, shut-down-the-trolls before the internet even existed kinda gal. Love me some Dorothy.

It has been an interesting exercise to excavate old hybrid memoir-fiction pieces and take out my revising chops.
This story turned out to be a personal favorite.

My pale white body is all angles. Eating is a rare and hidden pleasure, done only in private when at all possible. My wavy brown hair messily frames my oval face in a short, chin-length bob. Unable to overcome the urge to paint my lips, they are a dark red. I feel messy-sexy as I walk the three miles to the coffee shop meeting point. This walk will apply as a penance of sorts for the carefully applied Flirt lipstick
Gun ownership/regulations have been on my mind since at least middle school. With the news out of Uvalde during my kids' last week of elementary and middle school, I felt compelled to write and share my personal story about guns and why they make me so nervous.
I couldn’t believe how used we’d gotten to active shooter drills, and gun deaths. One of my children wasn’t surprised to hear of an elementary school shooting.
That’s how normalized gun death is in the United States.
I don’t think toy guns are the problem with gun violence in America.
Mass ownership of guns, lax gun regulations, and a care less about your neighbor attitude are all issues.
The United States has a romanticized vision of pistols and the Wild West. Pistols are evolving into assault rifles and this is a problem.

I'm a bit of a language/etymology nerd, so digging out this 20+ research article and revising it for today was interesting. It was even more intriguing to me when a friend, just this past week, brought up an issue in which their partner doesn't fully accept "they/them" as an evolutionary part of our language.
I immediately texted my friend the link to the following article. :D
People are often unwilling to speak out against oppressive language. Many humans, especially in my experience in the United States, don’t want to assign power to speech. In my 2003 research, using pronouns they/them seemed an impossible evolution in language. Yet, here we are, and I for one, am happy language is an organic and changing form of communication.

Let's finish this off with a silly story, some lighter reading, and what have you. This is totally most definitely based on real-life happenings.
“Cool!” I say through the discomfort. At least the conversation is interesting. “I fell in love with burlesque at the start of Covid. I found a bunch of competitions on YouTube. It’s on my bucket list to see a show.”
I’m embarrassed by my flightiness, my mistake in grabbing the wrong square to cover my lady bits.
Then again, we’re all adults here. Does it really matter if my lady parts are all covered up as the doc examines me inside and out?
