Anthropic launches Claude Opus 5 at half Fable 5's price
Anthropic
Anthropic released Claude Opus 5 on July 24, a 1M-token-context model with a low/medium/high/xhigh reasoning-effort toggle, priced at $5 per million input tokens and $25 output. The company says it approaches the frontier intelligence of its top-end Fable 5 model at roughly half the cost, and posts state-of-the-art scores on coding and knowledge-work evaluations including Frontier-Bench and GDPval-AA. Opus 5 is now the default model on Claude Max and the strongest tier available to Claude Pro subscribers.

Why it matters
A frontier-class model at a mid-tier price tightens the squeeze on rivals selling capability at a premium, and pushes long-running agent workloads into a cheaper cost band. It also signals that the competitive axis has shifted from raw benchmark wins to intelligence per dollar.
