[AI Skeptics] Hyperscale (introduction + ch1)
Hello everyone, this week hopefully you have our new book:

Last week we sort of started Hyperscale: The Ambition and Excess of Big Tech's Data Empires by Paris Marx, but we skipped discussing it for the first week, so... Let's read the introduction and chapter 1 ("Buildout") this week.
routine stuff
As a reminder, there are a few good ways to keep up with the reading group:
- newsletter: I generally send updates on Mondays and Fridays. In the Monday updates, I'll point to what to read; in the Friday updates, I'll send some reflections and some questions to think about, and a reminder of where & how to join the video chat.
- video chats: Fridays at 3p ET we'll have a video chat on jitsi where we talk about the week's readings.
- group chat: if you want to chat with friends, we have a few pretty active group chats: We're using Fluxer, which is similar to Discord or Slack. We also have a signal group chat (but keep in mind that Signal group chats can get overwhelming, especially at large scales like this).
reading plans
My reading plan for Hyperscale looks like this:
| Week | Reading |
|---|---|
| October 26 | Introduction & Chapter 1 |
| November 2 | Chapter 2 & Chapter 3 |
| November 3 | Chapter 4 & Chapter 5 |
| November 10 | Chapter 6 & Chapter 7 |
| November 17 | Chapter 8 & Chapter 9 |
This week is pretty short, but we'll get up to about 50 pages per week next week and mostly stay in that zone.

Okay, that's it for now. Take care, be safe, talk to you Friday.
