Socrates on the Beach Reading
Saturday, May 6, at 6:30pm, email for address
Dear friends,
In the fall of 2021, I stumbled across a new online mag, Socrates on the Beach, edited by Greg Gerke. After reading some great pieces there (including an excerpt of Jen Craig’s Wall, out now from Zerogram), I sent Greg a story, “Heart Reacts,” which he included in the journal’s third issue. Since then, he’s published another five issues, each of which has introduced me to strange, moving works by writers I likely wouldn’t have encountered otherwise (the Afrikaans story writer Koos Prinsloo; the novelist Mircea Cărtărescu; and, of course, Emily Hall, the author of the amazing The Longcut). Greg hasn’t just created a journal, he’s created a scene. And now that scene is materializing. This Saturday, May 6, at 6:30pm, as part of the new 1239 reading series, some Socrates on the Beach contributors will gather in a Brooklyn brownstone garden and read new things. The lineup:
You should come. Bring drinks if you’d like. Message me or email Greg (socratesonthebeach [at] gmail.com) for the street address.
I hope to see you there!
