13. Move fast and provide great service

My girlfriend and I are moving in together next month.

Moving from two separate locations into a third combined location requires managing a lot of logistics. We need to coordinate the homeowners association, the owner of the unit, the real estate agent, and the San Francisco Police Department (to block parking for our moving truck). Not to mention that we’ll have to merge our belongings (and emotional states) together for the first time.

But the first part of the move is packing and moving your things. We decided to hire a moving company. We have the means to hire a mover, and it’s kinder than asking our friends for help.

I don’t know any moving companies, so I searched for a moving company on Google. I clicked into the website of the first two results, and both of them had a form where I could enter in my address and they would send me a quote. I submitted the form, received two confirmation emails, and eventually got two phone calls.

  • For Got2Move, I submitted the form at 3:07pm and received a call at 3:17pm

  • For Dependable Movers, I submitted the form at 3:09pm and received a call at 3:11pm

The response times weren’t that much different — 10 minutes compared to 2 minutes — but it made all the difference. I didn’t even answer the call for the slower one.

The representative at Dependable Movers was friendly, efficient and a clear communicator. He dealt with my concerns (could we do two pickup locations?) and knew in advance that we would need proof of movers insurance to coordinate with the homeowners association. After the call, he followed up on all channels and even provided a video to help me put a face to his voice.

I felt taken care of and didn’t even call the other moving company back. I wanted to reward great customer service and I fully expect to get a great moving service too.
