When I dropped the second plate and it smashed on the floor the cook said with some contempt what are you maybe pregnant? and at fourteen I couldn’t join the one thread to the other, thinking maybe it messes up your reflexes? Thirty years on I can see how it was a calling out of carelessness, the one begetting the other, begetting a begetting and I think oh. Oh.
