this canyon is so deep that arctic lichens are said to grow on its floor, brought there by some glacier that dragged herself over the land once. i have a watercolour of it in my kitchen; it looks perfectly harmless, peaceable. i like to look at it when i stir a pot and think about the violence — what remains after the unbearable violence of slow time.
