the purpose of filming, either static or video is much discussed; it is agreed i think that it makes the ordinary spectacular which is to say a spectacle, something that is to be looked at. it’s the quality of looking that i turn to in my thoughts, and how it differs from mere seeing. a series of lenses like shades are drawn between the one who looks and the one who is looked at, the distance between them is resolved and made permanent — they exist at removes from each other. why this moment, and not another? we might ask. in that photograph i am not smiling, in any case i said fine whatever i don’t care, just not my face. please.
