happiness, like an egg

Like a perfectly cooked egg, the yolk just right, that slides out of the shell when peeled like the miracle of a minor saint. Here are four:

  1. a child is sitting at her desk next to the window which stretches almost the whole way to the ceiling and the light comes through horizontally and sits on the paper in front of her like a contented cat. she has found a new word and is testing  the yield of it between her tongue and bottom teeth; the word is spinnaker and it doesn’t matter yet what it means, the spiky feel of it is enough. she picks up the pencil and begins

  2. in the kitchen with S. and his friend, whose name translates into english as doesn’t care about nobody, and so that’s what they call him, making dumplings in a line. no one is talking and their hands are flying like starlings.

  3. in bend in the road, everyone is dancing, who knew that when belarmín does it, his feet hardly touch the ground? or that in his arms you too are weightless?

  4. most recently, on an unseasonably warm day, pausing in a field to look up at a small plane passing overhead, suddenly seeing the ground from above carved into squares like a chess board, and a tiny knight far below looking up and squinting, eyes shielded from the sun by a hand, waiting patiently to take the next step in her tour.
