Actions for Obsidian: Progress Report #3 (v1.0 Feature Complete‽)

Hello, Productivity Friends!

My name is Carlo and I'm the author of the Actions for Obsidian app for macOS & iOS. You're receiving this email because you signed up for updates about the app on my website some time ago.

I'm happy to announce that yesterday marked the definition of "Feature Complete for v1.0" in my development roadmap! 🎉🎉🎉 (Well, except for implementing the trial period and the payment functionality, but that's probably more important to me than it is to you. 😉)

So, today I'll give you a recap of the last 4 weeks, tell you about my pricing plans and open the macOS TestFlight beta to anyone. Onwards!

What's Been Done in January?

There were several new TestFlight builds, the latest was released today, so if you haven't yet, please update!

New Stuff

  • New Folders actions: you can now create, rename, move and delete vault folders directly from your Shortcuts workflows.
  • New Notes actions: "Get Note Link" returns a note's Obsidian link. Also there's actions for renaming, moving and deleting notes.
  • An automatic version check has been added, for the Actions URI plugin installed in your current vault. When you run an action it will alert you if the plugin is out of date. (The plugin is necessary for the communication between Shortcuts and Obsidian, and is installed as part of the the Onboarding process.)
  • I've added a few more examples to some of the action descriptions (which can be found behind the little circled "i" icon in Shortcuts' workflow windows when you hover over the list of available actions in the Apps sidebar).

Refinements / Changes

  • If you use an action that returns a note object (like "Get Note"), you can now pass the note object directly to any AfO action that expects a file path argument, i.e. you don't have to manually select the file path attribute of the note object anymore.
  • Vaults: The "Get … Folder" actions now have a toggle to return the path without the /Users/… segment.
  • Most text and action descriptions should look better grammatically.
  • The Onboarding flow, started by clicking the big blue button labelled "Link Actions for Obsidian with a Vault", now allows you to select your vault using macOS' directory picker. Click on "Select your vault folder…", pick the right folder on your Mac, done.

Pricing Plans

TL;DR: App Store, free to download, 2-week+ trial period, one-time payment of $10 / €12.

Actions for Obsidian will be a paid application, free to download from the App Store. It will offer a 2-week trial period. If you like the app, you can purchase it during that time.

The end of the trial period won't cut you off from your Shortcuts workflows, though: you will still be able to use AfO's full functionality, but it will start randomly reminding you to buy.

New Tutorial Videos

… are coming, along with a documentation site detailing all the actions. My todo list is long. 😉

Here's a sneak peek, though — a teaser video for a 2-way sync workflow between Contacts in macOS and Obsidian. The workflow automatically creates a new note for each contact in a given group, writes the contact details to that note, and adds an address book link to the note and a note link to the contact. When you run the workflow again, the existing notes are updated with any changed contact information.

A more in-depth video will follow soon, so keep an eye on my Youtube channel.

Open macOS Beta

The macOS beta is now in full swing, so if you know someone who might be interested in upgrading their Obsidian game with Shortcuts, give them this link:
