Adam Chapnick's Newsletter, June 3, 2020
Thanks for subscribing to this newsletter. Here is what I have been up to during these particularly challenging last few months:
In the Media
Over the last three months, I spoke with a reporter from the Canadian Press about using special envoys in the pursuit of a seat on the UN Security Council, and about whether it was worthwhile to continue to pursue a council seat in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. I also discussed Canada’s bid for a Security Council seat with reporters from the Canadian Jewish News, the Hill Times (twice), the National Post (twice) and Global News.
Blog
I blogged about Canada's terrific new ambassador to the United States, the importance of foreign aid in the global effort to contain the spread of COVID-19, the contested future of the liberal world order, Canadian relations with China, foreign aid and Canada's bid for a seat on the United Nations Security Council, the continued importance of diplomacy in world affairs, and the disturbing situation at Trinity Bellwoods Park in Toronto.
Public Speaking
I spoke to Canadian International Council branches in Winnipeg, Edmonton, and Saskatoon about Canada’s bid for a seat on the United Nations Security Council. I spoke to the United Jewish Appeal’s Genesis Group about Canadian foreign policy (via Zoom). I spoke to the University Women’s Club of Toronto about the United Nations (via Zoom). I was part of a NATO Association of Canada panel (via Zoom) on COVID-19 and its implications for Canada and NATO. And I offered a six-lecture course on the history of Canadian foreign policy to the Georgian Triangle Lifelong Learning Institute (via Zoom).
Upcoming Talks
This month, I'll be speaking to members of the Probus Club of Bradford about Canada-US relations (via Zoom).

On my reading list...
I have been rather busy at work, but Asa McKercher's Canada and the World since 1867 is at the top of my reading list. Readers should be warned that it is written for an academic audience, but Asa is a terrific writer.
What I'm tracking
The election that will determine whether Canada's bid for a seat on the United Nations Security Council is successful will take place on June 17th. I hope to publish a response to the outcome of the election shortly thereafter.
