Weightless Self-promotion

It’s churlish to dwell on all that can go wrong with the professional journalist. True, some aren’t completely annoying to be in the same room with, and some do good work.

Which brings me to Iuliia Mendel and the penultimate paragraph of her latest column, titled “Post-Soviet Challenges: Balancing Between the Past, the Present and the Future,” published on New Year’s Eve by the Kyiv Post.

Well of course this collection of words is galling.

Someone once told me that the real appeal of Ukraine’s global voice was its headlines: after the original laugh the articles might as well read Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet....
