The Christmas TV Strategy Guide 2025 #08

27th December 2025

1005 - BBC2

Is this a weekday? The weekend? Who knows, and who cares as here’s some classic black and white film noir to enjoy over your Frosties

1030 - 5

If the film noir is a bit too crunchy for the start of the day then this should hit the spot; big daft fantasy with stop motion and a clockwork owl. Get that kraken released!

1230 - ITV3

A few more Carry Ons although the first two aren’t the best. Khyber though is in that rarefied air at the top of the list, so that one would be worth your time

1250 - BBC2

More classics from the golden age of hollywood; what is probably Monroe’s most iconic role and then what is probably her best film. Also one of the best comedies, it’s really that good

1410 - ITV2

More fun films here; McPhee is schmaltzy but in a good way, Stardust really should get more love than it does and then it’s all wrapped up with some modern Ghostbusters which again didn’t deserve any of the flak that was sent its way when it was released

1610 - ITV1

Whilst the third film is generally a bit ropey, in the case of Indiana Jones its as good as the first film. The villains and set pieces may not be quite as good as Raiders but, good lord, the casting of Big Sean Connery was a masterstroke and more than makes up for any other deficits

1620 - 5 Star

Change of pace here with a few rom coms for you; depending on your tolerance for Gibson you can take or leave the first film but the pick of the bunch is probably 50 First Dates which is a a really properly sweet film

1815 - E4

It really doesn’t feel like the right time of year to watch this but you can’t say no to what is probably still Will Smith’s best film. Welcome to 'erf indeed!

1945 - BBC1

Baz Luhrmann brings not just his A game to this film but all of his other games as well as he makes about 5 films at once here. It packs in everything about Elvis in what feels like a giant montage sequence fired at you at a hundred miles an hour. Austin Butler somehow holds the screen despite Tom Hanks chomping through as much scenery as possible in a fat suit. A wild ride and no mistake

2100 - BBC2

More cracking westerns, both messing with the genre in their own ways; Unforgiven uses Clint Eastwood to unpack the mythology of the western whilst Butch turns the genre into a tale of the counter culture. Both are absolute classics

2100 - ITV4

In this liminal space between Christmas and New Year it’s a good time to watch Snowpiercer, a big bleak take on society and class all set on a train smashing through the snow. And think we’ve had Hot Fuzz already but it’ll be a good palate cleanser after all that satire

2100 - Legend

Speaking of satire, here’s a film that more than earns the “subtext is for cowards” gif. In a world of ICE agents and Trump Troopers becomes ever more relevant. Deep Rising doesn’t have any of that satire but does have Treat Williams on a jet ski. Who is the real winner there? I think the answer is obvious.

2200 - Channel 4

Shawshank is clearly the better film as it doesn’t feel as aimless as this film does at times. It’s another great cast and has great moments but doesn’t pull itself into a great emotional climax like Shawshank

2310 - Film4

Late night fun for those still awake; a great horror film and a slightly forgotten Pacino banger from the 90s. Maybe it’s the beard? He never looked great with a beard but still it’s a great film this one
