The Christmas TV Strategy Guide 2025 #02

21st December 2025

1130 - BBC2

Do you want to start the day off with some golden age Hollywood musical goodness? Thats lucky because here you are.

1530 - 5

Speaking of classic versions of things, some Scrooge for you as well in all its black and white glory?

1615 - Film4

I’ll always say to watch Romancing the Stone as its a great breezy adventure film. But the real reason we’re here is for Moonfall, easily one of the best dumb films you’ve ever seen. Never mind all the Avatar sequels, where’s all my Moonfall films and books and everything else?

1620 - ITV2

A good spread of films to enjoy here; a great version of The Grinch even if some parts of it aren’t ageing that well, something to have on when eating your tea so you can look up every now and then and go “this cost $200m?” and then the first of the Nolan Batmans to carry you into the evening

1900 - BBC4

1985 being 40 years ago gives me the cold sweats but there we go. This should be a good watch, mainly for me given I was 5 at the time so a lot of stuff here should be tinged with proper nostalgia. Or I won’t remember anything but either way always love a bit of Kenny Everett

1950 - ITV4

ITV4 tends to have good movie double or triple bills and here' is a decent one; Rocky IV is worth way more than 2 stars, Shaun remains a horror classic but we don’t really stick the landing with Expendables 2 which I’m sure I have seen but have no memory of at all. Pretty sure some folks get shot in it, I’d be confident in saying that.

1950 - Sky Arts

The Basil Rathbone Sherlock Holmes films are always a treat, especially the first two which where made by Fox. This is the second and is great fun, and is also where we get “elementary dear Watson” which is good to know.

2100 - BBC2

On first look putting a film about Robert Oppenheimer and a boxer together doesn’t really make that much sense. But both are about flawed driven men and the damage they leave in their wake so it does work. Both a great films but I think I prefer Bull, some of those fight sequences are just impeccably filmed

2105 - BBC4

More 80s nostalgia for you; no clue about the first show but with Forsyth and Corbett involved then it should be fun. I’d put good money on me having seen that Paul Daniels show though, as that thing was mega popular, not as good as the Halloween specials though but still.

2210 - ITV1

There is an argument that everything after the first John Wick film was unnecessary; it was a tight, well told pulpy revenge tale with a satisfying ending, the world building was great in that it gave everything a context that we didn’t fully understand but was still intriguing. Did it need expanding out with more characters and concepts and locations? Probably not. But then we wouldn’t have had the knife museum, or the one handed reload, or from this film the overhead sequence. It did need to be put to bed for a bit if only to give us a rest from the constant escalation and ever growing action sequences. This last film is as good as hurrah as we could have asked for to be honest.

2300 - BBC1

Now when people say “Die Hard is just a film set at Christmas” what they’re actually talking about is Die Hard 2 because that’s actually what it is; a film that is set at Christmas. Its still good fun, and whilst it can’t hold a candle to the two films either side of it, its a cracking early 90s action film.

2345 - BBC4

Yes mate, a TV ghost story starting up just before midnight; its another run at the Christmas Carol so the tale might be familiar but with Gatiss at the helm you can be sure that it’ll play up all the really spooky parts of the story

0045 - E4

Obviously this is on late for all the over the top gross stuff, but really this ends up being a documentary about a group of friends and the times they’ve spent together. Well, except for Bam Margera thanks to the drugs and his firing but thats by the by, the rest of the crew are still there and this is a great watch. Unless you don’t fancy the gross stuff.
