A thought (masculine impulse) must be received and given form (feminine nurturing) to manifest. Every person contains both principles, and balance between them is essential for creative wholeness. This principle explains all generation, regeneration, and creation on every plane of existence — physical, mental, and spiritual. The Kybalion emphasizes that this is not merely about biological sex but about a universal creative dynamic. Gender is an ensouled expression of Polarity.

The Corpus Hermeticum describes creation itself as an act of gendered emanation: Nous (Mind) generates the Demiurge (craftsman), who in turn shapes the material world — an interplay of projective and receptive forces. The coniunctio (sacred marriage) in alchemy directly expresses this principle. Its ultimate visual symbol is the Rebis (Latin: res bina, 'double matter') — the divine hermaphrodite, a two-headed figure of masculine sulphur and feminine mercury reunited into a single perfected being.
