☿ Hermetic Principle #2: CORRESPONDENCE πŸ”„

As Above, So Below!

The Principle of Correspondence πŸ”„

∴ As above, so below; as below, so above.

Patterns repeat across all levels of existence β€” physical, mental, and spiritual. What happens at the cosmic scale is reflected at the human scale and the atomic scale. By studying what we can observe ('the below'), we can infer truths about what lies beyond our perception ('the above'); by discovering divine truths through gnosis, the mortal advances upward.

This phrase derives from the Emerald Tablet, one of the oldest Hermetic texts, whose Latin version reads: 'Quod est superius est sicut quod inferius' β€” 'That which is above is like to that which is below.' The macrocosm (universe) and microcosm (human being) mirror each other. This principle enables the Hermetist to reason from the known to the unknown, using observable patterns to deduce the nature of hidden realities.

SCHOLARLY NOTE

The Emerald Tablet's fuller Latin vulgate reads: 'That which is below is like that which is above, and that which is above is like that which is below, to accomplish the miracles of the One Thing.' This principle underpinned all alchemical theory and practice.

PRACTICAL APPLICATION

By observing patterns in the natural world β€” the rhythm of tides, the structure of atoms mirroring solar systems, the fractal branching of rivers and veins β€” the student perceives the universal architecture πŸ›οΈ. Self-knowledge becomes cosmic knowledge 🌌.

Stoicism πŸ›οΈ

The doctrine of sympatheia β€” all parts of the cosmos interconnected, sharing the same rational principle. Marcus Aurelius wrote of the universe as a living being with one substance and one soul.

Buddhism πŸͺ·

Indra's Net β€” where each jewel reflects all others β€” is a vivid metaphor for Correspondence. Dependent origination (PratΔ«tyasamutpāda) teaches all phenomena arise interdependently.

Taoism ☯️

The I Ching embodies Correspondence, using 64 hexagrams to map cosmic patterns applicable to all scales of existence.

Modern Parallels πŸ”¬

Fractal geometry β€” patterns repeating at every scale β€” provides a mathematical parallel. David Bohm's 'implicate order' suggests the whole is encoded in each part.
