Zig Community Update #2

YouTube Link

We’re entering the next stage of growth for the Zig community. In this video I talk about how we need to be mindful of that and make sure to give a proper onboarding experience to new people so that they have a good time and we can all keep improving our IRL Minecraft world.

Links

zigbin.io

A pastebin for Zig code, with highlighting support to make it easier to point out specific parts of the code by cryptocode. The “mentioning a line in comments highlights it” functionality is amazing!

Setup Zig for Gamedev

Learn how to get started making games using Zig with this article and extremely clear step-by-step video by captainhorst!

(I promise to catch up with all the older links that I have yet to share here, I just wanted to mention these two very nice and recent examles of not-only-code projects that can be of great help to the community.)

New Episode

Software that you can Love: discovering the Handmade community w/ Abner Coimbre

I know there is already some overlap between the members our respective communities, but in this interview I’m going to explore with Abner what Handmade and Zig have in common, where our philosophies differ, and by how much.

If you never heard about the Handmade community, the best starting point is without a doubt the Handmade manifesto, which I highly recommend.

Show and Tell! (working title)

If you missed the last one, here’s how this works: you join a dedicated voice channel in Discord and, after we’re both ready, I put you on the stream, at which point you have 3-5mins to share your screen and quickly demo something that you’re working on. No pre-registration required, just be there for the second half and join the queue. Incomplete projects are fine too, just make sure to help us understand what the end goal is.

Abner will join me for this second half of the show so bonus points if you can tempt him to start programming in Zig ;)
