Research Update — Photronics, Inc. (PLAB)

Dear Subscriber,

Following publication of our June 2026 Strategic Asset Analysis on Photronics, Inc. (NASDAQ: PLAB), subsequent research has produced findings that materially strengthen the thesis. We are sharing this update in the interest of keeping our coverage current and our sourcing transparent.

  1. Competitive Position: A More Accurate Characterization

Our original report described Photronics as a picks-and-shovels play on semiconductor sovereignty. That framing was accurate but understated. Further research establishes that at advanced nodes, Photronics is the only U.S.-headquartered, publicly traded, independent merchant photomask supplier. No qualified domestic alternative exists for a reshoring fab that needs a U.S.-domiciled independent vendor. Toppan and DNP, the two other global merchant suppliers, are both Japanese-owned and Tokyo-listed. Intel's captive mask shop is not available to external customers. Within its node range, PLAB occupies what amounts to a sole domestic position in the advanced merchant photomask market.

  1. EUV Production Capability and U.S. Government Trusted Designation

Photronics' own corporate website confirms the company is in active EUV photomask production, supported by a manufacturing-grade joint R&D agreement with IBM Research covering 7nm and 5nm EUV mask processes. In August 2025, Photronics installed the first U.S. merchant multi-beam mask writer at its Boise, Idaho facility — explicitly supporting EUV and nanoimprint masks and carrying a U.S. Government Trusted designation. This was the first such installation for any U.S. merchant photomask supplier.

Taken together, these findings upgrade our characterization of Photronics from a reshoring beneficiary to a primary domestic strategic asset in the photomask supply chain.

  1. Near-Term Thesis Unchanged

The cyclical recovery question remains the clearest near-term test: the Q3 FY2026 print (expected August 2026) will confirm or deny whether the Integrated Circuit (IC) tape-out recovery management described on the May 28 earnings call is translating into actual revenue improvement. The structural findings above are independent of how any single quarter resolves; they strengthen the long-duration thesis regardless of near-term timing.
