1. Lazarus Group and Potassium botnet target PHP runtime via php2shell

17 outlets, 2026-10-21 to 2026-10-26 - severity 5/5

Two critical remote code execution vulnerabilities in the PHP runtime, dubbed "php2shell" (CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619), affected all builds since version 5.4, including PHP-FPM and Apache mod_php. CVE-2026-109618 involves out-of-memory corruption that leaves request memory uninitialized, while CVE-2026-109619 utilizes a heap use-after-free flaw during fatal error handling; both can be triggered by unauthenticated requests to execute code or leak worker memory. Exploitation began as early as October 17, 2026, with millions of attempts observed by Cloudflare and targets including a European government agency and various internet-facing hosts. Attackers, including suspected Lazarus Group operators and botnet controllers deploying the Mirai-derived Potassium botnet, utilized memory leaks to bypass ASLR on x86-64 systems. The PHP Foundation released emergency patches on October 21 for versions 8.2 through 8.5 and provided backports for older versions, while later warning of a third RCE vulnerability, CVE-2026-115560, affecting specific session configurations. As of October 26, various cloud providers and Linux distributions have shipped fixes, though some security vendors continue to refine detection sequences for ongoing exploitation attempts.

3. Meta Fined $25 Billion Over 43 Million Privacy Violations

4 outlets, 2026-10-22 to 2026-10-23 - severity 5/5

A New Mexico District Court judge ordered Meta to pay $25 billion to the state's school system after a jury found the company violated state unfair practices laws 43,899,725 times. This ruling responds to the Cambridge Analytica scandal, where the "thisisyourdigitallife" personality quiz app harvested data from approximately 87 million Facebook profiles by accessing the friends of the 300,000 users who took the quiz. The court determined that Meta deceived users regarding data privacy and its ability to investigate data misuse, noting that previous penalties, including a $5 billion FTC fine, had failed to stop these practices. Meta's chief legal officer argued the penalty violates constitutional protections regarding due process and excessive fines, characterizing the lawsuit as a tax on speech. Meta has announced plans to appeal the decision.

4. eMudhra Limited issued intermediate certificates with critically weak private keys

7 outlets, 2026-10-21 to 2026-10-23 - severity 4/5

Indian certificate authority eMudhra Limited issued eight intermediate certificates with critically weak private keys due to a script error during a key generation ceremony on April 30, 2025. The flaw reduced encryption entropy to 3–8 bytes, resulting in some private keys being simple numbers such as 4, 56, and 115, which allowed independent researchers to recover the keys near instantly. This vulnerability potentially enabled attackers to impersonate any website or service, affecting six TLS and two code-signing certificates. In response, Google, Mozilla, Apple, Cloudflare, and the Go project (CVE-2026-111943) blocked the compromised certificates, while Microsoft blocked the code-signing variants. The Ministry of Electronics and IT of India and CERT-IN launched investigations into the incident, which remained undetected for 18 months despite two audits. eMudhra has since revoked the affected certificates and announced its complete withdrawal from the global SSL/TLS business.

5. SafePay ransomware group breaches over 600 critical infrastructure organizations globally

3 outlets, 2026-10-21 to 2026-10-22 - severity 5/5

The SafePay ransomware group has breached over 600 critical infrastructure organizations across North America, South America, Europe, and Australia since August 2024. The group utilizes phishing, password guessing, and the exploitation of vulnerabilities including CVE-2020-3259, CVE-2023-20269, CVE-2023-27532, CVE-2024-40711, and CVE-2024-40766 to gain initial access, sometimes targeting Mullvad VPN IP addresses. Once inside, actors employ living-off-the-land techniques via Windows Remote Management and PsExec, disable security software, and use tools like AnyDesk, TeamViewer, and RClone to move laterally and exfiltrate data. Notable victims include Microlise, Conduent—which paid an $80 million settlement following disruptions to Medicaid and food assistance services—and Ingram Micro, where a July 2025 attack compromised the personal data of over 42,000 people. CISA, the FBI, and international agencies from the U.K. and Germany issued a joint advisory detailing these double-extortion tactics and noting that SafePay's code resembles LockBit. The group continues to operate independently, targeting 15-30 organizations per month throughout 2026.

6. Threat Actor Compromises LiteLLM Pipeline to Publish Malicious PyPI Wheels

3 outlets, 2026-10-22 to 2026-10-26 - severity 4/5

A threat actor compromised the LiteLLM release pipeline by using an Agent Platform master key accidentally published to a public GitHub repository in May 2026. This access allowed the attacker to steal a non-scoped GitHub CLI OAuth token from the organization owner, which was then used to disable branch protections and deploy malicious workflows to harvest secrets for OpenAI, Anthropic, AWS Bedrock, and other services. The attacker published compromised PyPI wheels and Docker images for LiteLLM version 1.107.0, which were downloaded over 49,000 times before being removed after approximately three hours. The malware utilized a dual-technique approach involving .pth files and sitecustomize.py to execute a credential stealer and a background daemon for remote code execution. Targeted data included cloud credentials, private keys, and browser data, with some attackers using stolen AWS credentials to perform "LLMjacking" and IAM discovery. LiteLLM responded by revoking tokens, removing users from its GitHub organization, and updating public registries to remove trusted links.
