The Steve Reynolds Program - Issue #3
Hey hey! It's Steve here. Or is it Wampus? Mr. Reynolds? What should you call me? Let's agree on Wampus. Call me Steve if we're together and you're lying to a third person. That'll be our code we got a sucker on our hands.
Four For Fun
1. The Dana Gould Hour - Joe Frank. This podcast episode explores mainly the work of the late Joe Frank. I never paid attention to Joe Frank, a singular voice on radio. The pithiest phrase I can think to describe him is Electronica Ken Nordine but I learned from this episode he is much more. Plus there's brief talk of Phil Hendrie whose body of work is genius and underappreciated. And host Dana Gould's last piece is a killer.
2. How Facebook Is Killing Comedy - This interview with Funny or Die's CEO is a brutal assessment of the monopoly of Facebook. Everyone should read this because you could sub in any art or business in place of comedy and still see this discouraging trend. This interview was one of my inspirations to do a newsletter: to share without clicking share on Facebook.
3. The Video Library - My town has a video store. It's such a refreshing changeup from staring at a screen and scrolling through Netflix or Hulu, staring at pixels illuminated by the unhealthy neuroses of Silicon Valley billionaires. Being in a physical space, randomly picking out DVD cases and reading descriptions is now like LARPing a game of Netflix and chill.
4. Fried Bologna Sandwiches - When I was in college, there was a beer bar that was for old locals. You kind of had to be introduced by a regular and welcomed in to spend time there. And the food they had was straight up adventure time (if by adventure you mean "ingesting grease in different ways"). A guy I knew only ate their fried baloney (spelling it that way to impart they got the cheapest baloney and not even Oscar Mayer) sandwiches for a semester. This link is the fancy way to do it but damn, it's delicious. I'll talk about Oklahoma's original innovation barbecued bologna some other time.
