The Steve Reynolds Program - Issue #12
An oppressively sultry hello to you all! This comes a little late. Some idiot forgot to pack the remote for the Roku so I haven't discovered many shows to recommend this week. Sorry.
I did see Solo: A Star Wars Story and thought it was a lot of fun. The Millennium Falcon in action was very entertaining. I saw some nerds were in an uproar over it and felt sadness and embarrassment for them, as I feel sadness and embarrassment over the major news stories of the day.
I'm listening to fuji while writing this. So you know I'm wiggling!
These Are Neat!
A Giant Dog - Pile - Pulled out this cd for a road trip and it did the trick. Sabrina Ellis is my favorite frontperson in rock. She puts on a great show, be it with her larger band Sweet Spirit or with this more punk rock lineup. Every song is meant to be played loud and the line from the chorus of Sex and Drugs "I can't even remember being young" is so heartbreaking but so affirmative in the now. It's a mantra.
Comedy Fight League - I'll never be in a roast again, but I love watching them. And the Oklahoma City one, about to be revived, should be the biggest roast battle in the country. It does something the other roast nights don't do: it has pro wrestling style storylines designed to get the crowd way into it. The best comedy writing comes out in these matches and they should be enshrined.
Lebron Worship - Lebron James's performance in the playoffs seals him as the greatest of all time. How he has grown into the statesman of the NBA from the kid coming straight from high school is a case of things going right. It's a thrill to see him come down the court, take in the opponents' defense and will the damn thing apart. Sheer mastery.
Mechanical Butterflies on Manure - The Sam Noble Museum of Natural History at the University of Oklahoma is a great, extensive museum. Upstairs to the left is the exhibit of wildlife in Oklahoma, showing a diorama of mammals, reptiles, fish and others crammed in with each other. In the buffalo wallow display, along with a rattlesnake's rattle that rattles periodically, is the only animatronic part of the upper floor. On a fake pile of bison manure are three models butterflies. And their wings open and close by themselves. It is such a charming little detail to discover. Robots on shit for whimsy sakes.
Me in Public
I will be doing comedy at Opolis Saturday June 9th. It is free and I need you there to laugh and support. We're taping sets for festival submissions. People are bringing their best. It should be great.
Tell people to subscribe. And I love feedback!
