** Subs are due now
Thank you for supporting the Waikawa Beach Ratepayers Association. We’ve had a busy year and it’s good to know we’re working with and for our community.
It’s time to pay your annual $25 sub.
Pay online to account 03 0667 0268929 000. Please include your name and beach address so we know who’s paid. There’s not a lot of space on the bank form, so it also helps if you email wbra.committee@gmail.com with your name, beach address, postal address, email address and date of payment so we can make sure our records are completely up to date.
Or, post a cheque to E White, PO Box 30309, Lower Hutt. However you pay your subscription be sure to include your beach address and name.
** Activity this year
This year your Committee members have spent many hours on submissions for the Horowhenua District Council Draft Growth Strategy and long-term plan, and the Horizons Regional Council long-term plan.
We also continue to deal with ratepayers and Councils on matters to do with river flow, erosion at the end of Manga Pirau Street, and the vehicle entrance.
We’ve worked in with Councils and other bodies to sort out visibility issues at the village entrance, on roading matters, and a mass planting of Spinifex at the beach end of the north track off Reay Mackay Grove.
We’ve kept you informed, sought your feedback and encouraged discussion through our website, newsletter, tweets and Facebook posts.
Soon we’ll be organising the annual Summer Events.
It’s definitely busy!
** Access for horses to the beach
We really want your opinions on ideas for allowing horses to get to and from the beach via the south track off Reay Mackay Grove. Please read the whole item on our website and leave your comments there. ** Fibre Internet for Waikawa Beach
Work is about to start in the village to bring fibre for Internet. According to Visionstream who are in charge of the work:
The team are currently tidying up over in Hokio Beach and are due to start in the next few weeks [October or November 2018]. The work will involve some digging and drilling for the ducts that will carry the fibre optic cable under the berms all around the village.
Any disturbed ground will initially be reinstated so that is safe, and at the end of the project in a couple of months the ground will be reinstated to the condition it was before.
Note that fibre is only available for part of our community: those in the village itself. Areas like Walkers Lane and Emma Drive aren’t included, nor is the area beyond around number 48 Strathnaver Drive.
For more information see Fibre Internet for parts of Waikawa Beach (https://waikawabeach.org.nz/2018/fibre-internet-for-parts-of-waikawa-beach/) .
** Spinifex planting
The Horowhenua District Council supplied 3,500 Spinifex plants and asked our community to help plant them where the north track off Reay Mackay Grove exits onto the beach. Around 40 people turned up and the work went very quickly indeed. Many thanks to all the volunteers. Read more at: Quick work on the Spinifex planting (https://waikawabeach.org.nz/2018/quick-work-on-the-spinifex-planting/) .
** Recycling changes
If you knew where to look you might have discovered that the Horowhenua District Council is no longer accepting soft plastics, such as supermarket bags, in the recycling. Read more at Important recycling change from 01 October 2018 (https://waikawabeach.org.nz/2018/important-recycling-change-from-01-october-2018/) .
** Property news
At the moment there is one house for sale. Building continues around the place, notably James Street and Strathnaver Drive.
** Did you know: Society news of the 1930s
In 1930s New Zealand a simple trip to Waikawa Beach could hit the papers.
Horowhenua Chronicle, 7 January 1930: … Mr and Mrs A. Blackwood and family, who have been spending the holidays at Waikawa Beach, have returned home. …
Stratford Evening Post, 29 December 1934: … Miss Ethel Gadsby, Opunake Road, is spending a holiday at Manakau beach. …
Note the intriguing “Manakau Beach”. Levin Daily Chronicle Stratford News
