Changing with the leaves
A bunch of ADHD tips in this one
Getting this out a bit late today. Rough night last night. Lots of thinking, soul searching, planning… Let’s talk about it. Hi, its Vincent again. I hope your day is going well.
Okay, get the tough stuff out of the way. I’m putting Runner Owen on the back burner for a while. My motivation for it is gone. I think it’s too ambitious a project overall to start off with. And more than that, I need a break. I’ve been working on this project for over five years, spinning my wheels, not letting myself enjoy things. Not to mention the last times I tried to write the latest short story, I fell asleep every time!
I’m forcing myself to stop working on Runner Owen for two weeks. If I feel I can go back after that, I will. If I can’t, the rest continues.
I was going to put both Runner Owen and PSI on the back burner, but a comment on Lock the Last Door over on Itchio today helped change my mind. Thinking about it, I haven’t lost my desire for PSI. I just need a different approach…
Subscribe nowSo I did a little research on ADHD time management.
Here’s something I learned: the average person with ADHD can only focus on a single task for about 45 minutes at a time.
Here’s something else I learned: people with ADHD live too much in the now and struggle to visualize the future, and known future events don’t often motivate them.
I can attest to both things. The second problem has ruined my life on more than one occasion… You can’t ‘cure’ ADHD but there are solutions, workarounds, etc. Here are some things I’m trying. I’ll link the sites I got them from below.
MULTIPLY YOUR TIME ESTIMATES BY 1.5. People with ADHD regularly underestimate how long a task will take. So in order to get things done, you should multiply your estimation from anywhere from 1.5 to 3.0. So if you think a task will take 10 minutes, do some math, and it becomes 15 minutes.
ADD BUFFER PERIODS TO YOUR TASKS. The ADHD brain hates to switch tasks. Add 5 to 15 minutes to let your brain switch gears before committing to something new.
ANALOG CLOCKS EVERYWHERE. Apparently analog clocks help the ADHD brain visualize the passage of time easier. So you should put them in every room in your house, or at least the rooms you’re in the most. That’s bit overkill for me but I’ll still put a clock in my room.
MAKE A ‘DID IT’ LIST. You can cross things off your to do list, but ADHD brains love to do stuff that isn’t on your to do list. Keeping track of everything you do keeps the ‘I didn’t do anything today’ sadness away, among other benefits.
DEVELOP A NOW/NOT NOW FRAMEWORK. Instead of fighting your brain, work with it. Decide what tasks need to be done now, or if you can put it aside. If you can set it aside, choose a specific trigger for not-now to become now.
ANCHOR YOUR ROUTINE. Some habits are already established or things need to be done. For example, I need to take my medications with breakfast every day. This is an anchor. I can add tasks before and after this anchor. Stretching before breakfast, reading a book afterwards. It works because it’s not as strict as, say, time blocking, which I am not ready to do yet.
There’s more, a lot more, tips at these links, if you need them. I’ll be trying more things as I research.

Unrelated to all this? I deleted my Instagram today. Combination of reasons. First is Meta’s AI policy, fuck that. Second is I’m not ready to market my fiction, and that was all I really wanted/needed that account for. Maybe someday I’ll make a new account… or maybe not. Again, fuck Meta.
I have also revived my Mastodon account. Go follow me there.
This week I’ll send two letters. Today I focused on what I’m doing to redirect myself towards my goals. On Wednesday or Thursday I’ll let y’all know what those goals are, and how my redirection is shaping up.
I’ve got too much to do. I can’t hold myself back.
Anyway. Good luck out there, y’all. Keep reading, keep supporting human creators, and don’t let the bastards grind you down.
