UARC Newsletter August

Decorative image to highlight that this is the University of Aruba Research Center Newsletter, with the logo on the right that has a curious looking shoco.

The Research Center is off to great start of the new Academic year - we already organized a workshop on Narrative CVs on 18 August (slides)! We are currently reviewing the applications for the now closed Project Administrator Vacancy for the Dutch Caribbean Digital Competence Network, and we are working towards the internal deadlines of the NWO Caribbean Research – PhD Scholarships 2025! We also congratulate Eric Mijts, our Research Center Coordinator, with his 25 year work anniversary at the UA! We are looking forward to dive into the new academic year and hope to see you during one of our upcoming sessions!

Events and Courses

CodeRefinery is offering a free online workshop on tools and techniques for more reproducible research from 9-11 September 2025 plus 6 following Wednesdays. While it starts at 5AM there is also a livestream that you can catch up on!

Research highlight - Miranda Gielen

Miranda’s research on Doing justice to the past: correcting the legacy of ‘slave names’ was covered by Diario!

The research article (Dutch) and summaries in English, Papiamento and Dutch are available on our Open Knowledge Repository. Get in touch with the Research Center if you have an article that can be summarized and translated!

Next steps for the Caribbean Research – PhD Scholarships 2025 call

In order to obtain a signed Institutional Declaration Form needed for the call, please keep in mind the upcoming deadlines:

  • Category A: Submit your full NWO application to the Research Center by 29 August, 17:00 PM.

  • Category B: Submit your filled in and signed supervision declaration form and a filled university declaration form by 5 September 11:00 AM to the Research Center. (So not your preproposal form itself, unless you want to receive feedback).

PhD of the Future

In this summary of a discussion session the Dutch PNN (Promovendi Network Netherlands) is stressing that there is a need to recognize the research process as a whole, and not just the publication of articles, when a PhD thesis is assessed (see also the survey that they conducted on this topic among PhD candidates in 2020).
