So What?
Per a new filing by special counsel Jack Smith, “So what?” was Trump’s response to being told Mike Pence had been moved to a secure location because his life was at risk during the January 6th attack on the capitol in 2021.
In last night’s debate, JD Vance was asked if Trump lost the 2020 election. Vance wouldn’t answer and instead tried to pivot to a lie about Harris censoring social media posts. He has said in the past he would not have voted to certify Biden’s election. Asked if he would commit to certifying a potential Harris win, Vance again refused to answer.
I’ve focused a great deal recently on Trump’s central campaign message - demonizing and lying about immigrants. But it should never be forgotten that Trump attempted a violent auto-coup (I prefer the Spanish “autogolpe”) and nearly every elected Republican over the last 3 years has tried to pretend that didn’t happen. (Convicted felon Peter Navarro, who was Trump’s White House Trade Advisor, is on MSNBC as I write this, saying Trump won the election using debunked evidence).
Jack Smith’s filing today is further evidence of the extreme and illegal lengths Trump went to in his attempt to stay in office. I will likely cover the filing in depth later, but do not ever forget the central issue of this election is not immigration, or tariffs, or healthcare. The central issue is that Donald Trump is a convicted criminal who encouraged violence and crimes from everyone around him in order to hold onto power.
Continuing Trump’s constant attacks that anyone not supporting him is mentally ill and/or “mentally disabled.” Trump has now said this of Jews, Catholics, seniors, and Kamala Harris. Trump doubled down in a later follow-up about Harris and elected Republicans did everything they could to avoid addressing his comments.
In response to Hurricane Helene, Trump has been lying bout about his own efforts and the actions of the Biden administration. Trump had an appearance in Georgia where his campaign said he was bringing truckloads of supplies. There were indeed trucks there from a charity group that had nothing to do with Trump. Trump said that governors in affected states couldn’t get ahold of Biden and were not receiving funding from the federal government because they’re Republicans. This is a blatant lie. The governors themselves have said they have been in personal communication with President Biden and have received the requested funding. Notably a large number of Republicans now complaining about a lack of FEMA funds voted to slash FEMA’s budget.
Trump has continued to repeat two egregious lies - that school children are receiving gender reassignment surgery during the school day and that Democrats are letting women kill newborn babies.
Trump has said if Harris wins the US will be sent into another Great Depression. He said the exact same thing about a Biden victory and the DOW reached a record high just a few days ago.
Trump has threatened John Deere with 200% tariffs because some of their parts are made in Mexico. This reveals that he does actually understand tariffs are paid by US companies and not foreign countries. Such a policy would be absolutely disastrous for the company.
Trump adviser Jason Miller has said a second Trump administration will allow states to monitor womens’ pregnancies so they don’t have abortions. If this sounds too far fetched to be true, a Trump official during his presidency was tracking the periods of migrant girls in custody to monitor them for pregnancies in case they wanted abortions.
I will have more to say about Jack Smith’s filing soon.
As of writing, there are 33 days until the 2024 election.
