Mitt Romney on the Moral Cowardice of the Republican Party
Heard any news lately? I’m a bit behind on my latest update as I’m trying to pare down the SIXTY breaking stories I have bookmarked to include in the next newsletter.
This story from November however just came up in my feed and I wanted to share it as it is a great read and an excellent insight into the state of the Republican party. (It should not be paywalled.)
The article contains excerpts from McKay Coppins’s biography of Mitt Romney.
It’s a great read but if you don’t have time, my key takeaways:
- Many Republicans in Congress cannot stand Donald Trump, realize he’s a dangerous idiot, and publicly support him regardless because going against him harms their political careers.
- They knew he was guilty during his first impeachment trial but the vote was primarily about political survival, not the truth of what happened.
- Mitch McConnell knew Senators' lives had been threatened, including his own, in advance of the 1/6/2021 attack and did nothing to stop it.
- More Republicans would have voted to impeach/convict Trump over the attack but they feared for their lives. He gives the impression this was enough to change the vote. Trump would have been convicted had Senators not feared for their lives from Trump’s rabid supporters.
While I was obviously not a Romney supporter, he may have been the last elected Republican left with any sort of integrity or character. And what the Republican Party is now under Donald Trump viciously attacked him for that.
