Just Stop Talking About That
Shortly after voting Trump was asked how he voted on Florida’s abortion ban. He told the reporter, “just stop talking about that.”
I cannot think of a greater summation of the Republican stance on reproductive rights. They know their base demands ending abortion in all circumstances. And they know that’s an incredibly unpopular position. The solution is to implement those ideas, not acknowledge you have, and ask that the conversation end.
Tonight we’re going to find out whether that’s effective.
I’d planned a longer update but I am quite sick so some quick brain droppings:
- We may not know who wins tonight and that's completely normal. Republicans weaponized this in 2020. There has never once in history been a state that finished counting on election night. In fact, military ballots still in transit are still going to count. In some states certain ballots can't even be counted until NEXT week. We can call states before every vote is counted because of statistics. 1,000 outstanding votes isn't going to change the outcome in California.
- If you have voted, you've done your part and you aren't going to change the outcome tonight. If you need to unplug, DO IT!
- Twitter is already a cesspool of bad information, especially coming from Elon Musk himself. If you want accurate info, I recommend Bluesky or just watching returns on MSNBC.
- Expect Trump to declare victory regardless of what happens and expect him to scream fraud again when he loses.
- The circumstances which led to 1/6/2021 are drastically different now. We have already seen scattered violence today, but we are unlikely to see a mass effort at overturning the election again. For one, the law has been changed to streamline the certification process and make objections harder. But even had that not happened, Harris will oversee the joint session in January instead of a Republican.
- Once the polls have closed, someone has already won the state. Any language of someone "leading" or "catching up" are incorrect. If I have 50 apples and 20 bananas, I have that amount even if I count the bananas first. This was another issue weaponized by Republicans 4 years ago.
Trump is due to be sentence this month and still faces charges in multiple jurisdictions so I will be continuing this newsletter regardless of the outcome.
Take care of yourself tonight and I'll see you on the other side.
