Greenland, Help is on the Way!
(Help is not on the way.)
Every now and then we get a perfect microcosm of how broken this administration and the media coverage of it is. Trump announcing he was giving every American access to a fictitious medbed which would cure all disease is a great example. The White House said he was just kidding. And then the media stopped covering the fact that the president of the United States had posted an AI generated video of himself announcing every American would get access to a medical panacea which does not exist.
Tonight, the president posted what looks to be an AI generated image of the USNS Mercy, one of the Navy’s two hospital ships:
Working with the fantastic Governor of Louisiana, Jeff Landry, we are going to send a great hospital boat to Greenland to take care of the many people who are sick, and not being taken care of there. It’s on the way!!! - Donald Trump on Truth Social, 2/21/26
There is no medical emergency in Greenland. Greenland also has universal healthcare. There is no reason to send a medical ship to help Greenland with an emergency that didn’t happen.
The major news outlets got this far. But from what I have seen so far tonight, they have missed another key problem with his post.
The USNS Mercy is currently in drydock undergoing a refit. It cannot move. The Mercy’s sister ship is also docked in the same port at the moment.
Neither ship can be on the way because they’re Alabama.
Like the medbed video, my guess here is that everything about his post is fictional. The president of the United States is once again posting completely made up announcements in the middle of the night.
Before 2017, the alarm bells that would have set off would have reverberated around the globe.
Unless there is some bizarre truth in deploying one of these ships, reporters will ask about this, the White House will deflect entirely, and then the media will never mention this again. That’s the exact pattern the medbed story took.
There are far more important stories right now like the Epstein scandal and ICE’s actions, but it’s important to be reminded that things like this are now happening frequently - President Trump posting AI generated slop that is completely fictional.
Letting these stories fade away so quickly works to normalize him which has already been done far too often.
